Practice (e.g. with the problems in the various books available, and comparing your solutions with published ones *after* you've done the best job you can) is a reasonable next step. Then writing an application should follow. Cheers, Elizabeth -- ================================================== Elizabeth D. If you are extremely determined, then you might find a way to study underneath somebody else who has years of successful Forth experience. Maybe find one of the old imbedded systems guys to work under for a few years. Pay a Forther to have them tutor you. Or, you could pay Forth Inc for the privilege of taking their courses. Or going it alone... > I cant even figure out how to get anything done in forth I've never had any problem like that. I went from Atari Basic and 6502 Assembly straight to Forth and never had a problem transitioning. But then again I was always trying to think for myself from first principles even if that is sometimes slow and painful. I have a theory about this. Some people are just better at coming up with new ideas and at being independent in their approach to solving problems, while other people are naturally inclined to follow in the footsteps of others. Both sides have their advantages and disadvantages. If you are the kind of person who tends to follow others, and to implement what has already been done and to do things the way others have done them before, then you may have a difficult time with Forth, as there are not the same amount of libraries and the same amount of sample codes as there are in a more popular language such as C. All I can suggest is this, if you look at the problem in a bottom up approach, solving one tiny part of it at a time, rather than looking at the problem as a monolithic whole, then you may get somewhere. For some people, this will be such a large change in thinking and be such a large leap of faith that they will find it impossible to conceive of as a reasonable thing to attempt. But, for those who can make the switch, you will find that Forth indeed is a mental lever of near infinite length. "Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the Earth with it" Archimedes.

What did the forth apps do? I have to agree with Gavino on this --- comp.lang.forth seems to be rather heavy on ego and light on accomplishment. I'm learning Scheme, and struggling with it in much the same way as Gavino is struggling with Forth. Most of my problem is just lack of motivation. There is really very little chance of making money at any of this. I'm mostly just learning Scheme to better myself (I tried to learn Spanish too, also with the motivation of bettering myself, and failed at that too). I've made money as a Forth programmer though, plus I'm so familiar with Forth that writing programs is easy for me, so I have a lot of inertia programming in Forth and I continue to use it although I know it isn't a very good language compared to all of the others available --- I still think it has potential in the micro- controller world --- but the Forth community has been talking about "potential" as far back as I can remember (1983), which is too long.

Have you seen sunet and scsh? racket webserver? and awful by chicken scheme folks? Scheme seems awesome. blgo your progress? Is there a forth apps blog like cpan plus a forum kinda thing to talk about forth apps aside from usenet or is usenet the main thing? I find forums easier to navigate that google groups.

There are many ways to develop websites. Racket and Chicken are minor players in that field. There are also many shells available for Linux. SCSH is a minor player in that field. None of this has anything to do with me, as I don't know anything about either website development or Linux system-administration --- and I don't have any interest in either subject. My interest in Scheme is mostly for compiler-writing, which is a subject that I do know something about, and is also something that Scheme is particularly appropriate for. I'm also interested in writing code to generate gcode for CNC machines. I've done this in the past with Forth (and gotten paid for it). Scheme would work pretty well for that. Other possibilities are Lua and Cat. It doesn't really matter all that much which language is used as the framework --- the primary criteria is that it is simple and easy to learn, as most machinists don't have much programming experience and even less interest in programming theory. Mostly what is holding me back on that project, is that I don't have access to a shop full of CNC machines at this time. I want to support at least a lathe and a milling machine, although a 5-axis laser cutter would be great if I could get access to that.
