Thanks, this is cool. One thing I wonder is how much functionality is
defined by the verilog language and how much is left to the
compiler/synthesizer. For example, I thought addition in hardware was
done with an adder circuit, of which there are several types giving
space/performance trade-offs. But in verilog, it looks you can just say
"a+b"--how does the synthesizer know what circuit to use? Or in the j16
code, it says:
4'b1101: _st0 = st1 << st0[3:0];
That appears to be interpreting a logical shift instruction, but does it
mean the synthesizer plops a barrel shifter into the fpga? Why is the
return stack pointer 16 bits instead of 5 bits like the data stack
pointer?
