In any case I don't see much gained from writing a 5-line function in C instead of Forth in a situation like that. I do take your point that the GA144 is really built for signals rather than character data, and it took a while for this to sink in for me. Recall that the early discussions of possible applications for it included things like disk controllers, I can't help wondering if they could have improved DSP performance quite a lot by making the ALU a little bigger. That wouldn't increase the node size that much, since the node (in the photos) seems dominated by the ram, rom, and stacks.
