Ok, I tested this with the following program on gforth-fast on a Core
2 Duo:
2 constant n
: bench ( ... -- ... u )
0 300000000 0 ?do n pick + loop ;
4 3 2 1 bench . drop drop drop drop
The resulting cycles per iteration of the loop:
n=2 n=3 n=4
9 9 9 Gforth's PICK
66 89 110 recursive PICK
So on this implementation we see about one magnitude of difference for
the uses of PICK that occur in practice. Even assuming that a
different implementation might be more efficient with its own PICK,
only be doing 3 PICK in less than 1/1000th of a cycle (i.e., less than
0.33333 ps) could the implementation be 100000 times faster than the
recursive one.
Ok, with a big-enough N we can make the recursive PICK arbitrarily
slow, but such big Ns don't occur in practice.
Just for fun I ran the same benchmarks with VFX Forth:
n=2 n=3 n=4
5 5 5 Gforth's PICK
27 36 44 recursive PICK
