This subscript faking seems ugly too.  E.g. the "toggle every nth door"
comment is wrong since "pass" now actually toggles every (n+1)th door.

I agree that the local helps readability but I defer to you and the
other Forthers whether its use is idiomatic Forth.  I thought though
that the { n -- } locals syntax was gforth specific and that ANS syntax
was different and uglier.
