MVars are still used.  STM helps when things get confusing but it's
considered slow when there's a lot of contention.

The next generation x86 (Haswell) will apparently have hardware support
for memory transactions ("TSX", transactional synchonization
extensions).  I haven't studied it yet and don't know if there are plans
to support it in GHC.
