Not if you want perfectly reasonable code to run correctly without
overflowing the stack.
If I'm using a compiler that claims to support VLAs, and my program
happens to define a VLA object inside a loop that's executed a very
large number of times, I'd really like my program not to blow up
when I run it. The number of compilers that get this right suggests
that this is not an unreasonable expectation.
(It's perfectly possible to create a conforming implementation that's
essentially useless, but why bother?)
