That's not entirely true.
I consider the language to be lax in some areas, specifically in
the fact that old-style non-prototype function declarations and
definitions are still fully supported. Constructs that should be
obvious errors, such as function calls with incorrect arguments,
are not required to be diagnosed. There is of course a solution
(use prototypes, and if possible use compiler options to diagnose
use of non-prototypes), but the standard's failure to *require*
prototypes is, in my opinion, lax.
I consider many, probably most, compilers to be lax in some areas.
One example: I consider it unfortunate that gcc in its default
mode does not diagnose some errors, and that even in the most
straightforward conforming modes some constraint violations are
diagnosed with non-fatal warnings rather than as fatal errors.
Of course the standard does not distinguish different kinds of
diagnostics, but I would prefer all constraint violations to be
treated as fatal errors. Of course there are ways to make gcc
behave more reasonably ("-std=c99 -pedantic-errors"), but too many
programmers and users don't bother to use those options.
There are workarounds for all these problems. I would prefer it
if those workarounds were not necessary.
