No that wasn't sarcasm, I really didn't know that. With the kinds of
queries I make any Usenet posts are going to be buried down in the noise.

OK, I was wrong. He specified that the answer to my objection was already
on the Web and I apologize..

I looked at the first four pages of summaries for "compressing million
random digits file" and saw one hit that stood out, it spoke of a 1.36%
compression. Perhaps I should be impressed by that, but I am not - or maybe
that's the wrong post to look at. .

I made another attempt, with more of your keywords and noticed the name
Bruce Schneier in one of the summaries. He not only describes the method
used to produce the book, he says:
"I have a copy of the original book; it's one of
my library's prize possessions."
I think a recommendation from someone such as him elevates the book a few
notches above the Schildt comparison made in this thread.
