Physical access is heavily restricted, logged, and audited 2. User data is encrypted at rest 3. Hard disks are asset tagged and physically tracked; removal from machine and retirement are logged and audited events 4. A retired hard disk is first "wiped" by overwriting, with read-back verification of the overwrite 5. The disk is then physically crushed with a hydrolic press, deforming the platters 6. The crushed disk is then shredded 7. _Leaving_ a data center is hard as Googler's have to go through metal detectors to ensure they're not trying to take a storage device with them. I don't know what they do for SSDs, but I imagine it is similar. I presume the other hyperscalars have similar processes. - Dan C.
