#650 — Thousands of Files in "c:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\Microsoft\Protect\S-1-5-19"

Dear SQLers:

I have written about this before, have searched for answers
before, and I still do not have a solution.

Thousands of 368-byte files are being created in "c:\Documents
and Settings\LocalService\Application
Data\Microsoft\Protect\S-1-5-19". How do I get this to stop?

Even deleting these files can take hours. There are that many.
Running a chkdsk can take a lot longer than usual when there are a lot
of these files on my system.

From my searching, I understand that it may be due to Reporting
Services and a cryptokey problem, but I know of no way to stop it.

     HELP!

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

I have no ideas what that may be. On this computer I have to directories
under Protect with a SID in the directory name. One directory has a single
file with a GUID name and a file Preferred. The other directory has five
such files + "Preferred". But this is a netbook which I rarely use when
I'm at home, but right now I am travelling. There is no Reporting Services
on this machine.

I can see that the latest such file is from Aug 22nd, which is about the
day I took out the netbook to prepare it for the trip.

One idea would be to write a program in the language of your choice which
deletes all files but the latest, and run it from Task Manager or SQL
Server Agent regularly.

I do, but with files being created at about one every three
seconds the last time I checked, that is 25 to 30 thousand files per
day.

Sincerely,

Changing the account used for the ReportServer service might help:

I have a basic installation. I am not even using the reporting.

And what account do I change it to?

Oddly, the Reporting Services Configuration Manager will not let
me into the panel for Service Account. I get:

There was an error while switching panels. The most likely cause
is an error in retrieving WMI properties. The exception details are:

InvalidArgument=Value of '2' is not valid for 'SelectedIndex'.
     Parameter name: SelectedIndex

I can get into all of the other panels.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Why not stop the RS service then?

Well, I do not know that that actually is the problem. It was
only something I read. I did solve the problem though:

I started Windows in Safe Mode. I set the files in the directory
to R/W and deleted them and the directory. I then created a text file
with the same name as the directory. So far, it seems to be working.
The commit charge on my system is lower, too, but I do not know if
this is connected.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

What gave you the idea to try that?

I may have seen a case of it in the past. That a directory entry
exists does not mean it is the type that you want. I figured that the
file creation would fail on a path error. It was possible that the
file would be deleted and the directory recreated, but I doubted that
would be done.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Do you now have thousands of entries per day in the event logs instead?

No. There are several entries apparently connected with what my
problem was, but no, not thousands. Thanks for pointing out that
possibility; I had not thought of it.
