So at that point, they were only concerned about single-thread performance. Leave the 'parallel processing' crap to SGI, Intel is gunning for this spot. But after that, they took a turn, they realized that some day dual-core will be 'normal', and probably more after that, so they worked on making it good. And that is where we are today. And a few years from now, any computer that isn't like 10-core will be a jalopy.
