I think the main problem is that the performance goes down so very 
quickly, i.e. any given programmer will believe that "I can do much 
better, I don't need all the overhead of a random exp backoff, I can 
simply spin a couple of times until the current owner is finished."

I.e. it works well now, on the developer's quad laptop, it won't work at 
all in live environment with 100+ cores and 1K+ processes. :-(
