Anyone with an explanation as to why, at night headers are taking ages to download to the extent of timing out, it happens on my XP computer with seamonkey but it also happens on thunderbird through a separate linux computer. This only seem to leave myrepublic with its modem or astraweb. It does seem to be associated with the time of day PS also eternal sept, which seem to let out astraweb. only seems to leave web interface. Inexplicable as ookla gives same speeds even at the period of my problems

This new 40 plus speeds fibre and Usenet does not work as well as it did with dialup. Maybe the modem differentiates between usenet and normal browsing ??

It is picking up speed now,11.45 aprox. How could congested times slow usenet but not ordinary browsing?

It is worst between 6 pm and 10 pm.

I don't see any real effect until about 8:30pm now. I used to be able to see the school kids get home from work, stuff their little faces and then get on the net about 4pm but with the reconfig that Optus Wholesale did on my POI, don't see that at all anymore. And by any effect, I mean the download speed graph on speedtest.myrepublic.com.au, it starts to get noticeably more spiky after about 8:30pm doesn't have a huge effect on the actual download speed number tho.

In theory they could be selective about what gets priority when congested. Unlikely that they would deprioritize usenet when congested tho.

Duh. I meant that the usenet volume is unlikely to be big enough for anyone to consider deproritising it during peak times, if they even know what nntp is. > Maybe they proritise port 80 (HTTP), 443 (HTTPS), More likely what streaming uses given that when that starts to buffer is very noticeable to the customers. > maybe some common Email ports, Even less likely now that so many use web mail. > and have a lesser priority for everything else. No evidence of that with everything else slowing too. And it can't be happening anyway given my nntp traffic doesn’t slow in peak times and I use the same RSP and modem.

The congestion could be local to the usenet servers rather than at your end. My wife watches online videos sourced from Asian servers. At seemingly uncongested times she gets a lot of buffering. I do a speedtest on local servers here - no issue. Do the same speedtest using servers in Asia - Singapore, Bangkok, etc. and the cause becomes very apparent - with high ping times and very low DL speeds. -- Xeno

Nope, works fine here with nin, the MR modem and Windows Live Mail and with Newstap on iOS, both with wifi on the MR modem and with 4G, no difference between those at all.

Not sure what operating system you are using (XP) But WIN10 if you left click your internet task bar icon and select "troubleshoot problems" it may fix it or point you in right direction. -- Petzl Arguing with a woman is like reading the Software License Agreement. Unlikely when browsing works fine but nntp doesn't.
