The RF link on these meters only works over short distances. Hackers would have to loiter around your house. And remote-reading gas meters are rare - only used for large industrial users.

You can be quite a long distance away from the person whose system you wish to hack into and, yes, you can send and receive with equal ease even if the other end has no amplification. I know how well they work since I have a very similar 2.4 GHz setup here. Hasn't been set up since I left Melbourne 4 years ago however as I have no line of sight into town, just to the wooded hillsides and there's not much to hack into in those. Definitely no on-line fridges! In Melbourne there are a bunch of these dishes and a variety of radios sending from places like the top of Mt Dandenong to the city, Mt Eliza across the bay, tall buildings in the city out to distant suburbs lik Kangaroo Ground, etc. There's a bit of a mesh network happening and most people aren't aware. -- Xeno

Yeah, that one can't fly given that fridges have to cycle anyway. > The RF link on these meters only works over short distances. I don’t believe that they've actually been stupid enough to have 'smart' meters that need the meter reader to be close to the meter to read it. > And remote-reading gas meters are rare - > only used for large industrial users.

You DO NOT need three separate meter readers to read meters on one and each property. Each meter reader is a separate company contracted by a politician $$$$$$ backed scam to read these meters. Only ONE meter reader is needed to read all three! Not stupid so much as difficult to coordinate completely automating all 3 meters at once, particularly the ones like gas and water which don't even have any power to run the meter off. And they don't want to have any meter readers at all, they want to be able to read all the meters remotely completely automatically. > So instead of just one thug (that's all > that's needed) coming onto myproperty You arent supposed to have any with a properly implemented smart meter system. > I get three!
