It seems bullshit that somebody could tell what you're watching on TV or
when you open the fridge.
The RF link on these meters only works over short distances. Hackers would
have to loiter around your house.
And remote-reading gas meters are rare - only used for large industrial
users.

All you would need is a setup like this;

https://dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/bulletm/bm_ds_web.pdf

set to the appropriate frequency and you can achieve 10-20 kilometres
with ease over line of sight. You can be quite a long distance away from
the person whose system you wish to hack into and, yes, you can send and
receive with equal ease even if the other end has no amplification.

I know how well they work since I have a very similar 2.4 GHz setup
here. Hasn't been set up since I left Melbourne 4 years ago however as I
have no line of sight into town, just to the wooded hillsides and
there's not much to hack into in those. Definitely no on-line fridges!

In Melbourne there are a bunch of these dishes and a variety of radios
sending from places like the top of Mt Dandenong to the city, Mt Eliza
across the bay, tall buildings in the city out to distant suburbs lik
Kangaroo Ground, etc. There's a bit of a mesh network happening and most
people aren't aware.

They'd certainly be able to see the power usage change when you cook dinner
etc.

Yeah, that one can't fly given that fridges have to cycle anyway.

Some use the mobile system.

I don’t believe that they've actually been stupid
enough to have 'smart' meters that need the
meter reader to be close to the meter to read it.

"They" are stupid enough to have three meter readers to read water,
power, gas?

So instead of just one thug (that's all that's needed) coming onto my
property I get three!

domestic water and gas meters are mechanical so they need to be read
manually

You are not getting it?

You DO NOT need three separate meter readers to read meters on one and
each property.

Each meter reader is a separate company contracted by a politician
$$$$$$ backed scam to read these meters.

Only ONE meter reader is needed to read all three!

You don't need any meter reader with the best smart meters.

That's actually Joyce.

No they don’t. Plenty of places do that remotely
using the mobile phone system and a battery.

Not stupid so much as difficult to coordinate
completely automating all 3 meters at once,
particularly the ones like gas and water which
don't even have any power to run the meter off.

And they don't want to have any meter readers
at all, they want to be able to read all the
meters remotely completely automatically.

> So instead of just one thug (that's all
> that's needed) coming onto myproperty

You arent supposed to have any with a
properly implemented smart meter system.

> I get three!

You've always had 3 if you have all 3 services.
