They'd certainly be able to see the power usage change when you cook dinner 
etc.

Yeah, that one can't fly given that fridges have to cycle anyway.

I don’t believe that they've actually been stupid
enough to have 'smart' meters that need the
meter reader to be close to the meter to read it.
