yes, but I'm just saying it's not like he's going to get cut off if he
doesn't do it quickly. besides, there's no guarantee how long it will
take to connect him once he does apply, so it could take many weeks for
the infrastructure to be installed, particularly if there are a lot of
ppl wanting connections at the same time.

There is no infrastructure to be installed with FTTN.

Once you can signup, the infrastructure has all been installed
and all they have to do is jumper from adsl to fttn in your pillar.

No it is FTTN IE fibre to a green box nearby or a few streets away, and
small amount of existing copper to your house, it has all been done for
months, am just waiting for the ok (I think they are testing their
system) can not do anything till the house holder gets notified then you
sign up with provider and they send you a modem or you buy one then a
technician bridges a cable link in a box or pillar and you are away.
They are just being tardy and have not switched on yet,(they only have
two days left on what they said would be the time, jan 2017)

What does it show at
http://www.nbnco.com.au/

Took a full week for the other half of town which went live on 20-Jan
to show as live there, altho the MyRepublic check showed it as live
on that day.

Allegedly tomorrow, quite literally.

Optarse did fuck up very comprehensively indeed. NBNco could never
fine any record of anyone ordering an NBN service for my address.

MyRepublic originally ran the line that they didn’t know what
the phone number for my phone service was, even tho I told
them that when I signed up by phone using their call center,
because they have to know the number to port to their voip
service since there is no POTS service with the NBN, just voip.

Even after I gave them that, again, still NBNco couldn’t see any
order for a phone service for my address, even tho I was calling
them on it since the NBNco number is a 1800 number and I am
clearly getting an adsl2+ service on that line.

I kept being told that it would take some time to happen, and eventually
after being told that about 6 times, chucked a tantrum and got supplied with
the Optarse order number and the number to ring at Optarse Wholesale.

When I rang Optarse Wholesales, the silly cow claimed that she couldn’t
actually order an NBN service for my place, even with the phone number.
There was no way to enter that on the order form. Corse they didn’t bother
to tell anyone about that problem, just raised an incident with NBNco which
is what happens with a fault, not a problem with ordering a service.

NBNco told me that they had a 'back room' group that handled that
sort of problem with ordering a service and that I should tell the RSP
that they needed to use that. I told Optarse Wholesale that at about
1620 in the afternoon and she claimed that everyone had gone home
and that she 'wasn’t trained to do that' and that she would check that
with her senior staff the next day.

When I rang Optarse Wholesale again next day at around midday,
the fuckwit refused to even talk to me and said that he couldn’t
even look up the details of my service for 'privacy' reasons.

I called NBNco again and they then had an order for my service.

Called MyRepublic again, and they now had a record that I would
be getting the cutover from the adsl2+ service to fttn tomorrow
and that I didn’t need to be there, the tech would just be doing
the jumpering in the pillar and it should all work fine after that.

We'll see, tomorrow. Havent noticed anyone doing any work in the
pillars cutting anyone over since my half of town went live on 23-Dec.
Less clear if anyone has got an fttn service yet in my town. I ordered
an fttn service on the day it went live in my half of town and the
modem showed up between Xmas and New Year.

My neighbour's kid also ordered a service with MyRepublic a bit
later than I did and he showed up last night and told me that he
has an appointment date of 5-Feb or something and that
someone has to be there at his place. He has the modem too.

We both should get very close to 100/40, particularly me.
I can damned near spit on the node and the pillar and the
cable is as direct as possible to the pillar from my place.

His is 300' further away, but should still get in the high 90/30s.

Everyone else I know well in town went live on 20-Jan and I
don’t know that any of them have actually ordered the NBN yet.
I was talking to one of them this arvo and he certainly hasn’t yet.

I'll be grovelling towards Mecca first thing tomorrow.

What does Optarse have to do with it? are they your current copper line
supplier? My republic when I rung them said that I should see them when
ready and they would send the modem and after it was working I should
then cancel telstra service, I did not ask about phone numbers.

Optarse is the wholesaler that MyRepublic uses. Both are operations
based in Singapore although both have australian call centers, or
atleast the Optarse Wholesale part of Optarse and My Republic do.

> are they your current copper line supplier?

Nope, my retail provider is dodo and they are reselling Telstra.
TPG is the only other operation with DSLAMs in this town.

> My republic when I rung them said that I should see them when ready and

You'll find they ask if you want the current phone number ported to their
voip service when you sign up. That's optional, some don’t even bother to
have a handset plugged into their POTS line so they don’t get spam calls.
Doesn’t cost you anything to have their voip service, you only pay for calls
made if you don’t pay more per month for their voip service at various
levels.

The modem they supply does voip.

Do you think that accepting their new assigned number instead of keeping
your old number would lessen hassles.
I am not wedded to my existing number and would only have hosp. bank and
a few others to notify.

all it means is that they don't need to port your number, so you get
connected a little bit quicker. but if you are getting spam on your old
number, it will avoid that. also, when you get a new number you can
choose to have it unlisted, which will also avoid spam

Having an unlisted number does not in any way shape or form guarantee no
spam. I had an unlisted number for decades. Still got spam. Spammers are
limited to harvesting numbers from publicly listed directories. They
have many alternative sources.

maybe no guarantee, but at least it can reduce it. so far I have
received none on my new unlisted NBN number

No you don’t with the FTTN service. The voip number
takes another couple of days to get connected.

> but if you are getting spam on your old number, it will avoid that.

Only in the sense of avoiding the couple
of days when the number doesn’t work.

> also, when you get a new number you can choose to have it unlisted,

Yes.

> which will also avoid spam

Nope, quite a few just call numbers at random.
