My youngest daughter has gone bush and is 10+ks from the exchange. Helstra will not hookup ADSL as they say the distance is too far for reliable service. Does anyone know of any providers that use the Telstra backbone but offer better value? I had a look at Aldi but it was no cheaper that the big T.

We are 15ks west of Toowoomba and when my daughter visits from Brissy she has no signal (Optarse) and uses the wifi. >

These are *post*-paid ('contract'), right?
And it seems that you want a long(er) expiry time, right?
If both are correct, then you may want to have a look at *pre*-paid
Telstra mobile broadband.
For example 5GB at $50, i.e. a little more expensive than Aldi (which,
AFAICT, you can't use anyway) and twice the price of Telstra post-paid,
BUT with *one year* expiry time.
Anyway, have a look at Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband (for example):
<https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/telstra-pre-paid-4gx-wi-fi-plus>
Main page at:
<https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/mobile-broadband/prepaid>
You may also want to have a look at Telstra's data-bundles (BrowsePlus
Packs) for mobile *phones*. If you buy a SIM starter pack for that
service, you can use the SIM in a device which is/acts_like a WiFi
hotspot. Perhaps the speed of this service is lower, but the BrowsePlus
Packs (and Data top-up Packs) have different, often cheaper, price
points than Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband, BUT all with a 30 day expiry
time.
Main page at:
<https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles>
[N.B. I see that you can now also use the 'Data Passes' with this, so
going this route seems more flexible than going with Telstra Pre-Paid
Mobile Broadband.)
FYI, I use the latter on my trips in Oz, i.e. I use it as a 'data-SIM'
in a smart-phone, which is used as a WiFi hotspot. I can also use the
smartphone or a 'dumb'/'feature' phone USB-connected (USB tethering) to
my laptop, but normally I don't bother and just use the Wi-Fi hotspot.
HTH.

Aldi is using the Telstra network and is/has gone to 4G. So it is usable.

You'd better *check* that, both in theory - i.e. with the coverage maps on the *Aldi*, *not* Telstra, website - and in practice - i.e. by buying a 'starter pack' and actually trying it on site. I say this, because last time (23DEC2015) I checked these 'cheap' providers, I found that Aldi uses *part of* the Telstra network. Aldi also *says* so: "Medion Australia Pty Ltd. trading as ALDImobile uses part of Telstra's 3G mobile network. The mobile product of ALDImobile provides a 3G coverage footprint of 98.5% of the Australian Population covering 1.3 million square kilometres. Outside the 3G coverage footprint, customers will revert to 2G coverage and speeds. The combined 2G and 3G footprint covers 98.8% of the Australian population." Note the "part of" bit! :-( To see the differences, check: <https://aldimobile.com.au/#/overlay/coverage-tw> versus <https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/our-coverage> I checked an outback town (Birdsville) which I knew had 'real-Telstra' coverage and indeed Aldi's coverage map did *not* show that town.

The webpage *still* says that! Note that the site only says "4G is coming soon..." ... "We will be gradually migrating customers over the next 4 weeks". The coverage map does not mention 4G at all. So until *Aldi* says it uses the complete Telstra network and *changes* their coverage map, my advice to SG1 still holds: *Check* on site, especially because this is about a *fixed* location! Doesn’t alter the fact that Aldi may well be much better value than Telstra and the most that may be required is to use Telstra for a couple of weeks if the need is urgent.

Nope, data packs aren't contract,
you buy what you find you need.
> And it seems that you want a long(er) expiry time, right?
He's never said what her data usage is likely to be.
But the comment about 6GB being the most aldi has
which is just plain wrong in the sense that you can buy
as many of those as you need, implys its more than 6GB
per month.

Aldi is MUCH better value on the plan needed to
be able to use those data packs if she doesn’t make
many phone calls or if they are only short ones.

In spades when you consider the cost of the plan you need to actually use the data pack. In fact if she doesn't use it to make any phone calls at all and sends no texts, it is MUCH cheaper to use an Aldi Pay As You Go Plan than anything the Telstra has to offer. And that is true if she only makes short calls and sends texts too. That is the way I do it and it doesn't even cost me $10 month and I do in fact make lots of short calls every Saturday during the garage sale run now that we coordinate the opening times using our mobiles.

Funny how that works. YOU CANNOT STRENGTHEN THE WEAK BY WEAKENING THE STRONG.

Critical Information Summary NBN-SB-50-70 Information About the Service Service Description The NBN-SB-50-70 Plan is a nbn ™ Satellite service with a Peak Information Rate of 25/5 Mbps. This Plan has a Normal Data Allowance of 50 GB and a Bonus Data Allowance of 70 GB. Minimum Term The minimum term is thirty days. Bundling The offer does not depend on bundling with other services. Mandatory Components There are no mandatory components. Inclusions, Exculsion And Any Important Conditions, Limitations, Restrictions Or Qualifications nbn co retains ownership of any satellite equipment it installs as part of the rollout of its network. For example, the satellite dish, modem and cabling. The satellite equipment will be serviced and maintained by nbn co. For all Plans except Night Owl Plans, Data Blocks can be purchased at any time to to avoid being speed limited by SkyMesh or to remove speed limiting that is already in effect, subject to nbn co’s Fair Use Policy. Service Reductions by nbn co cannot be removed by purchasing one or more Data Blocks. Data Usage is counted in both directions, so if you download 20 GB and upload 10 GB, that’s counted as 30 GB. Your Peak Data Allowance can only be used during Peak Hours. Your Off Peak Data Allowance may only be used during Off Peak Hours. Off Peak Hours are defined by nbn co as between 1:00 am and 7:00 am. The given times apply to your local time zone. If you exceed your Normal Data Allowance during a Billing Period, your Peak Information Rate will be reduced to 128/128 kbps for the remainder of that Billing Period (except during Off Peak Hours if you have remaining Bonus Data available). If you then increase your Excess Data Usage by placing a continuous load on the service, your Peak Information Rate will be progressively reduced. We do not charge for Excess Data Usage. nbn co considers that 75 GB or more of Data Usage during peak hours in any four week period constitutes a breach of its Fair Use Policy. nbn co considers that 150 GB or more of Data Usage in any four week period (Peak or Off Peak) constitutes a breach of its Fair Use Policy. Certain games and other highly interactive software (e.g. share trading / live-streaming) which require low network latency are known to perform poorly (or not work at all) on satellite broadband services and so SkyMesh deems the service as provided unsuitable for those purposes. Your maximum throughput will be lower than the given Peak Information Rate for your Plan and can be affected by: Overheads imposed by Ethernet and other protocols you use such as TCP/IP, the Internet server you are accessing, the network between SkyMesh and the server you are accessing, the network between SkyMesh and your service, and local factors such as the performance of your computer equipment including your network router and wireless network. If you are not sure whether your equipment can keep up, please consider a router from our list of recommended hardware . You may upgrade your Plan as often as you like during each Billing Period, subject to nbn co’s Fair Use Policy. Downgrades are effective on your next Billing Day. We do not charge a Plan change fee. Copyright © 2016 SkyMesh Pty Ltd — ABN 62 113 609 439 Information About the Pricing Minimum Monthly Charge The minimum monthly charge is $124.95. The unit cost of 1 GB of data within your Total Data Allowance is $1.04. Your Total Data Allowance is the sum of your Normal and Bonus Data Allowances. Please note that one gigabyte (1 GB) is equal to one thousand megabytes (1,000 MB). Maximum Monthly Charge The maximum monthly charge payable is calculated as the minimum monthly charge payable. There are no Plan Change fees. Please refer to the https://www.skymesh.net.au/services/nbn/satellite/lts. php for data block information. Maximum early termination charge There is no special charge for termination. The customer may request termination of the service at any time, however SkyMesh requires 30 days' notice to process the termination request. A pro-rata invoice will be raised to cover any days in the 30 day period which fall after the end of the current billing period.
