Both the wp article and the Deb article describe the state of affairs of 
the dongle being both storage and modem.  The Deb article recommends 
just unmounting the storage if it is up.

The Deb article also discusses using wvdial to mess with the dongle.  I 
found the instructions in the Ubuntu section of that article useful. 
You could perform some of those steps in your report here.

I see 143 articles about other Huawei in the Mageia forums including 
other USB dongles, but nothing about the Huawei E220.  It sounds like 
the E398 may be similar in the storage feature business, but it is an 
LTE device.
