The article assumes that the 'current' kernel modules support the device 
and describes commands useful in confirming the support and includes a 
Ubuntu section.

The Puppy distros have a lot of discussion about later kernels dropping 
support for various dialup modems.  I would hope and assume such dropped 
kernel support does not apply to such cellular modems as this discussion.
