That article is written for (old) Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 and a Huawei E220 
UMTS/GPRS 'Box'.

Ub 6.06 was built on kernel 2.6.15 before the Huawei E220 was supported 
in the kernel (2.6.20 as above).

You shouldn't have to do all that stuff described at the .at site.
