Yes, Fortran II had a slightly different syntax, but
it was still perfectly possible to do the same thing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortran#FORTRAN_II
shows an example of
C INPUT - TAPE READER UNIT 5, INTEGER INPUT
C OUTPUT - LINE PRINTER UNIT 6, REAL OUTPUT
C INPUT ERROR DISPLAY ERROR OUTPUT CODE 1 IN JOB CONTROL LISTING
READ INPUT TAPE 5, 501, IA, IB, IC
501 FORMAT (3I5)

Even sillier than you usually manage. IBM did plenty of timeshare rather than batch.

Disk was limited, so it was primarily used for loading a few
executable programs like compilers and assemblers. It was also
used for intermediate temporary files; for example to pass information
between phases of a compiler.
However, Fortran II on the 1620 DID allow the programmer to
do disk I/O for *A* temporary file. This was not the device independent
I/O that later appeared in Fortran IV.
DEFINE DISK - Allocate disk space
RECORD - write to disk starting a specific sector within file
FETCH - read from disk staring at specific sector
FIND - Start a seek to a specific sector in anticipation
of a later RECORD or FETCH for that sector.
FIND was never needed except to speed things up.
Personally, I never used FORTRAN II disk I/O.

Curious. I do not remember any of those keywords. Could they be eliminated by a site? We were a university with lots of kiddies (including the staff of the computer center) playing around with the computer. /BAH

IOW, the object time system had to be loaded > before any FORTRAN program in the card hopper. > > /BAH The IBM 1620 with (IBM and also Kingston) FORTRAN II did (or rather could) use disks, provided that you installed the IBM Monitor --- which was a type of overlayed hypervisor which kept a very small piece of code laying around so that when a program ended (FORTRAN, SPS, GOTRAN, the Disk Utility Program, or whatever user program), it would regain control and then reload itself from disk. If that small piece was overlaid with part of a program or data, there was a very small bootstrap (usually just a very few amount of punched cards) that loaded the full version from disk. It's job was to read the input stream (in our shop, it as punched cards, but paper tape and also magnetic tape was supported). We never had paper or magnetic tape on our system at the university), just the usual typewriter, card reader/punch, plotter, printer, and disk. --- And we didn't have the floating point feature. We also had 40,000 digits of memory (20,000 was the standard, 60,000 was the maximum amount you could get for the Model I). The control cards in the input stream (cards), as I recall, had two field marks in col 1 and 2, followed by an XEQ followed by what program you wanted to load (from disk). In our case, it was almost always the Kingston FORTRAN II [one-pass] compiler. We also had IBM's FORTRAN II available, but it was a two-pass compiler and was slower than molasses in January, plus, if you used floating point, it required that (optional) hardware feature on the IBM 1620. If you wish to read more about the IBM 1620 Monitor: http://bitsavers.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de/pdf/ibm/1620/monitor/ Kingston FORTRAN II used a software simulated floating point and it compiled at reader speed --- except for real hairy statements that spanned several cards. You could hear the card reader pause for a half-second, then continue. _________________ Gerard Schildberger

It was definitely a lot faster than the IBM compiler. If I recall correctly, it did not however support anything like the FANDK control card to set a different precision. Aside, both Walter Banks and I used to work with Prof. Jim Field who had been one of the Kingston Fortran authors years before.

Yes, but that level of user were not experienced operators. Very few of them were even touch typists, let alone knew anything about the drum card and how to program it. I did, but I also got to run the IBM 360/50 myself in the evenings. None of them ever did. I got to fix the keypunch when they had got it jammed too.

That meant a Teletype user had to carefully zero fill all numbers and manually space to the proper column, while a keypunch operator hit skip or the machine did so automatically via drum card. The keypunch keyboard was faster to type on by an experienced operator than a Teletype keyboard. One did not have to zero-fill for numeric data....not even on an IBM 1620. AS for entering data, it was extremely simple to write a program to accept datum items and store them the way the downstream processing program wanted them. You could even write TECO macros to do that. Cutting a papertape was a lot easier on a PDP-10 because you could edit the disk file with TECO and proof it. Using disk files instead card decks was a big improvement over IBM's requirements for card I/O. Even the BASICs added keywords to save the just-typed program as ASCII or the executable (back then they were *.SAV files. /BAH

Our radio astronomers used a PDP-9 at Parkes and a PDP-15 back in Sydney. None of ours used a PDP-10 for the downstream processing. The nuclear physics operation at the ANU in Canberra in fact used the obsoleted IBM 1620 for direct data capture and used the new IBM 360/50 for the downstream processing, using punched cards to move the data from one to the other. > Abott Labs used the PDP-10 to capture data adn then process it. >> A Teletype is great for small volumes of data since it is easy to learn >> and >> use. I did the same thing with machine language, my KIM-1 had a really good monitor so I could single step things and see the outcome. Being able to try out many of the functions and statements in BASIC without writing a whole program was a definite plus. And of course, for some things, you could just run a line of code and get results. On the other hand, I didn't get BASIC until well after I had a calculator, and a calculator just seems easier to use. But then a GUI calculator on a computer doesn't seem the same thing as a pocket calculator. I'm taling in terms of use, not function. Michael

BASIC was developed in the early 1960s, long before C et al were developed

I might point out that BASIC also doubled as a calculator. It was very easy

I know the thing I dislike about Basic which was what I started with is
that line numbering thing. If you didn't go by 5,10,15 or even better
10,20,30... then you could run out of lines and have to do a lot of
re-writing.
