The Bonneville Power Administration was created by the U.S. government
in 1937 to market wholesale power from federal hydroelectric dams on the
Columbia and Snake rivers. In 1938, information officer Stephen B. Kahn
established BPA's motion picture division to educate the public
about the benefits of clean, affordable and reliable electric power from
the Northwest's unique power and transmission system.

....

I was computer geek at WSU ... while undergraduate they hired me
fulltime to be responsible for production mainframe systems.

They commissioned Woodie Guthrie to write a series of songs about the
project. "Roll on Columbia, roll on."

Yes, and as I mentioned some months ago, that album is available at
archive.org At least it was, I keep meaning to retrieve it. I did order
it a few years ago, only to be told after a wait that they couldn't get
it.

The dam, according to a PBS show about it (it might have been an American
Experience), was initially intended to get water into areas that needed
it, the power was a byproduct. But when WWII came along, that cheap and
available power helped build up the pacific northwest, companies like
Boeing setting up there.

Boeing was founded in 1916 (as "Pacific Aero Products Co.") and took the
founder's name in May 1917 before the US entered the Great War. Grand Coulee
power had nought to do with it.

for the airplane construction taking place at Boeing in Seattle. With
no capacity to produce aluminum in 1940, the Pacific Northwest was
producing 36% of the nation's aluminum output by 1946. It is estimated
that one third of the aluminum used in aircraft during World War II

It was the "Hoover dam" bit that threw me off. Of course Bonneville Power
did the Grand Coulee and other pacific northwest dams, I knew that (but
temporarily forgot), it was Bonneville that hired Woody Guthrie to write
somgs about it.

The Grand Coulee affected a burial ground, I gather some of my distant
relatives were buried there and had to be moved.

Sorry. At some point years ago I got the impression that "Hoover" was a
renaming of the Grand Coulee Dam. BPA has nought to do with Hoover Dam, I
think.

Both WHG and PGA learned BASIC on a GE Information Systems hookup (that is,
real Dartmouth BASIC, commercialized by General Electric, on whose hardware it
originated). Then they were introduced to a startup service bureau in Seattle
(Computer Center Corporation, affectionately know as C-cubed) which used a
PDP-10 as the compute engine.[1] This was where they learned assembler
programming, debugger and operating system internals, and all the things
necessary for a successful career in the computer industry.

Traf-O-Data was post high school. PGA thought the 8008 (NB!) was a good basis
for a side-of-the-road traffic counter, and wrote a simulator in PDP-10
assembler for the processor. This was the tool with which the two of them
developed software for the hardware they commissioned someone else to build.
The device was a commercial failure.

When the 8080 came out, PGA thought it was a great candidate for BASIC; WHG
didn't want to write one for a processor that no one was using yet. The Altair
was the turning point. PGA revised his 8008 simulator to handle 8080 machine
code, and they were off to the races.

                                                                Rich

[1] Principals included Steve Russell of MIT AI Lab and Dick Gruen of SAIL,
both of which were hotbeds of PDP-10 usage.

But it wasn't about personalities, but their value to society.

People who aren't technically inclined give the "entrepreneurs" more
value, simply because it's something they can grasp.

Or there is the case of Steve Jobs, who gets all kinds of credit, simply
because he is the better known one among the general population, so he
gets credited with having invented the Apple II, because people only know
him and not Steve Wozniak.

Such people can't see that none of this would happen without the technical
people, so facebook is seen as so important, while all the layers
underneath it "don't count".

Woz was particularly technically skilled with innovative hardware and
software design. Of particular note Woz designed the apple ][ disk drive
and wrote the original apple integer basic and sweet16 a convoluted and
clever 16 bit interpreter that ran on the 6502.

A modern day Woz is Chip Gracey at Parallax who has been doing
innovative processor design for embedded systerms

far as I can tell MS starting with W8.1 has become a lot more
