But that's another example of what I was saying, the original "IBM PC" had BASIC in ROM, just like the Commodore 64 and all the others. But if you added a disk drive, the language would be extended so it could do disk operations. But the BASIC in the OS relied on the BASIC in ROM for much of the code. So that wouldn't work if it ran on a "clone" that didn't have the BASIC in ROM. It was the more universal "MSDOS" that had the full fledged BASIC that didn't need the ROM. Michael

Actually, Microsoft (originally Micro-Soft) did not yet exist when the two high
school friends, along with a third programmer that Gates met at Harvard, wrote
a BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800. I can quote you the opening lines of

The business acumen came in when instead of selling the program to Bob Roberts
of MITS (creator of the Altair 8800), Gates licensed it to him while retaining
the right to license it to other microcomputer manufacturers. Since none yet
existed, Roberts went for it. Micro-Soft was incorporated later that year.

CP/M only ran on a single system, the Intellec-8, when the Altair came out. It
was ported to "S-100" systems, that is, 8080-based microcomputers using the
Altair bus, after the success of MITS, IMSAI, and others using that bus. A
version of Microsoft BASIC was written for CP/M later, but originally their
BASIC was a standalone program for whatever computer it was ported to.
There were dozens of versions of Microsoft BASIC for several different
microprocessors for years before the IBM PC came along.

There were others for various small computers, SWTP had their own BASIC, but he was able to sink his teeth into many, especially once BASIC started appearing in ROM. I think if your computer had BASIC in ROM, then it was from Microsoft. The common BASIC compiler for CP/M was by someone aligned with Digital Research. I forget the guy's name, but Jerry Pournelle wrote about it quite a bit, and the author was either in the navy, or taught at a Navy school (which Gary Kildall also did at one point). Wait, it was CBASIC (your comment below pointed me in the right direction) by Gordon Eubanks. > [snip] > >> As far as I know, anyone else was free to develop their own BASIC >> compiler, indeed, I think Ky/Kz developed something called "True >> BASIC", though it didn't catch on. I can't remember if that was stated as fact or speculation. Some just wanted to stay away from Microsoft I guess. Radio Shack's original BASIC in the TRS-80 was based on Tiny BASIC as outlined in Dr. Dobbs, but then the "extended BASIC" was from Microsoft. Michael

If I recall properly, and I'm not looking, the previous claimed that Microsoft BASIC used tokens, as if it was a new development. I'm saying that it was probably not something invented by Swiftwater Bill. He definitely popularized BASIC by getting it on all kinds of home computers. But I don't recall him being credited with adding anything to BASIC, he was riding on what came before. Adapting it to the different hardware isn't "adding to BASIC", it's just allowing the BASIC interpreter to make use of different graphic hardware. Michael

I consider him very close to the Devil Incarnate! But there *was* much added to BASIC. Look at the Radio Shack Color Computer BASIC, which is very similar to BASICA and GW-BASIC for the IBM PC ... all developed by Microsoft. There were commands to play musical notes and also commands draw lines on a high-res screen. ISTM that there was a CIRCLE command that would draw a high-res circle. In addition, an editing command was added that was almost identical to the SOS editor on the PDP-10's line edit command. You can edit a particular line and delete or insert characters. This is *not* unexpected, since Gates and Allen worked on a PDP-10 in Seattle when they were teenagers, as well as using a PDP-10 to develop Altair BASIC. -- numerist at aquaporin4 dot com

The compiler version also had a screen editor, so one didn't have to bother typing in a line number for every line, and could easily modify statements, search for things, etc. There were also debugging aides. When DOS 5.0 came out, IIRC, this editor was included for everyone (replacing the cumbersome EDLIN), and an interpreted version of the BASIC, QBASIC, came with it (EDIT and QBASIC used common pieces). I don't know if Gates/MS developed those innovations or not. But they did speed up programming.

I remember edlin. I was very pleased with it.

I don't think I've used any text editor since that allowed you to perform block operations on any arbitrary rectangle of data (i.e. from X1,Y1 to X2,Y2), which was occasionally useful.

I did actually pay a shareware fee for one - I used the OS/2 version. I think it was called the 'Technical Editor'. That facility (Block) was very useful at times. I think I even got the source.
