The real problem is that while a calculator with way more functions than the HP-35 can be had for about ten dollars, but if you want RPN the selection is more limited, and costs a lot more. Michael

I have an HP-35 but it has been in storage ever since the battery gave up so I can't look at it. But, from memory, the only added math function is factorial. There is a lot of statistical stuff, which I never use, on my TI-30Xa, which is what I normally use. I also have the early HP financial calculator and it's functional but it has no trig functions and so it's pretty useless to me. I wrote an RPN calculator for the Atari ST but I got rid of all of those a few years ago, it was a fun program to write. I wonder if RPN would have fared better if it didn't have an off-putting name? Reverse and negation are off-putting words in my mind, Polish sounds like it might be a joke. Oops, I see my TI-30 has a key labeled 'HYP' so that sounds like added math, too.

The N is for "notation".

I was noting the similarity between reverse and negation, since reverse is not a common trigger word for me. I meant no involvement of the N in RPN. People often use negation when trying to say something without actually saying it. Made up example: "The NEXT computer was not without its successes." I have to sit and fuss with it to see what the guy is trying to say. So I was trying to point out the similarity between reveres and negation. I hadn't noticed the leading 'N', it was just coincidental.. The calculator was nice because it was dead easy for me to add new functions; of course that didn't help anyone else.

The "N" in "RPN" is a trailing "N"... unless you are dyslexic. I don't see how "The NEXT computer was not without its successes." qualifies as a "reverse negation". I think a "reverse negation" is more like: "Each bite of the meal was better than the next." -- numerist at aquaporin4 dot com

Microsoft had a clause in its contracts that said if a company sold X86 hardware then the company had to pay a licence fee to Microsoft even if there was no Microsoft software present. This made CP/M86 too expensive.

No it didn’t. ALL it did was give the operation a better price on the licenses if it paid for a license for all the X86 hardware it sold. > This made CP/M86 too expensive. That as a long time after CPM86.

This made CP/M86 too expensive. I think it was more like if they wanted a bulk distribution license then they were to be included on all assembled computers. The fees for doing this were substantially lower. For mass assembled and distributed computers this made sense of small assembly shops it wasn't so attractive. The reason for this was any computer sold would have a valid license and the assembly shop could say distribute half the computers with licenses. The auditing problem was which half. Outside the mainstream retail distribution. Computers without an OS were relatively easy to obtain. w..

Their stuff was just good enough to do the job, but actually required a fair amount of local support. In a sense they bred experts on their stuff. You used to see this in computing centres running OS/360 and some other system (GCOS, TOPS-10, CP-V MCS) Often the two systems did about the same amount of useful work but the IBM system had 3-10 times the support staff (and like cost twice the amount). However, when new hardware was need there were a lot more people in the shop that were personally invested in the ins and outs of OS/360 than in the other systems.

Could you elaborate a little more on that? If I am correct OS/2 was kind
of a joint venture with IBM and MS. I've also heard Gates suggested on the
new PCs that Kildall's CP/M be involved. Then after their BASIC product
MS-DOS was on the IBM/PCs.

If someone wanted to do that they threatened to jack up the price of windows to that manufacturer, which would make their windows systems non-competitive. This is supposed to be illegal according to various antitrust acts, but by the time anyone got a conviction all they got was a slap on the wrist. -- Pete
