Ah, dBase. The history is a little cloudy but originally shapefiles were a 
proprietary Esri design. After everyone and their dog hacked them Esri 
backed off on the proprietary part.

dBase was used to store the attributes of the geometries, but not the 
geometries themselves. They were in a separate file with variable length 
records. The order of the attributes for each geometry determined the 
order of the geometries. There was also an index so you could find a 
geometry in the variable length mess.

I don't know if it was the luck or the draw or a design decision but we 
used db_Vista.

Queries were a little arcane but it did have the concept of sets and set 
ownership so you could create a geodatabase where the attributes and 
geometries were actual tables in the database rather than a complex add on 
to get around the dBase limitations. 

That's another one of those little mysteries -- why dBase became the king 
of the hill when the Raima product was superior in its day. Shapefiles 
live on and have become the GIS lingua franca although the first thing 
most people do is import them into a modern, spatially aware DBMS.
