In January 2025 I bought 2 x MZHOU PCI Express X1 to 6-Port SATA 3.0
Expansion Card– ASM1166 Controller for £40 each. Today one of them appears
to have failed, only recognised intermittently on boot. Swapped it for the
other which still works fine.

If I buy a SilverStone Technology ECS06, 6 Ports SATA Gen3 (6Gbps) for £60
with the same chip will I get better quality, better reliability, higher
speed WHY?

The Silverstone needs a 4 lane slot against 1 lane for the MZHOU.

What are the decent makes for components nowadays?
