I can confirm killing xfsettingsd fixes the issue (but Xfce is not
really usable after that).

I have launch again xfsettings with the debug option and use firefox, I
have the following messages related to fontconfig.

$ XFSETTINGSD_DEBUG=1 xfsettingsd --replace --no-daemon
