Today, two days later, when I opened Firefox 47, all the add-ons have the following message above them in the Add-ons Manager: [Name of add-on] could not be verified for use in Firefox. Proceed with caution. However, the add-ons are NOT disabled, most likely because I have xpinstall.signatures.required set to false. All the add-ons are still working and the icons are present. BTW, starting with Firefox 48, there is no longer an override that allows an unsigned extension to be installed in the Release and Beta versions of Firefox. My ESR version, Firefox 52.9.0 ESR, does still have this preference and none of the add-ons have been disabled there either and seem to be working as before, including Firefox Tracking Protection. The Nightly, Developer and unbranded versions of Firefox supposedly still have this preference and should allow you to do this if you are determined to keep using an older version despite the risks. All of this is in Windows.
