For the past few phones (back to early Nexus days) I've been using Supcase holster-type cases and have never had a screen scratch or problem. These super rugged cases have a built-in thin plastic film that goes over the screen and although it might get smeary it has never allowed any screen damage. These films have never interfered with fingerprint readers on phones which have them. To me, putting a phone in a pocket is just asking for it.
