Thanks. I am trying to do this on a raspberry pi with rasbian, an debian 
based jessie system for arm cpu's..
I was not aware that apt-file existed. I have installed it and used it 
to find libgtkmm-3.0.so.1 in a directory /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/
Other raspberry pi users have not reported a problem using pavucontrol 
so I'll have to figure out why I have this problem.
