I suppose you've checked for caps-lock, sticky keys etc.

Try booting from a live CD or USB stick, mount your system disk, edit the /etc/passwd file (on the system disk, NOT on 
the USB) and zero the password field for root (or any other user). Password field is possibly an 'x' beween two colons; 
change to '::' and try again.

Remember to reestablish root password if -- hopefully -- you succeed!
