I had no difficulty opening a Tutanota account through Tor. All it did was inform me that to prevent abuse (presumably automated spambot sign-ups), the account wouldn't be active for 48 hours. I have no problem with that (hey, beggars can't be choosers). I've also had no problem accessing my Tutanota account through a VPN.

It could be that some Tor exit nodes are being blocked for precisely the reason stated, abuse. In that case, hit the New Identity button in the Tor Browser and try again.
