The details of my >g tolerance depend on the duration and direction of the acceleration! Just read a report about American coast guard surfmen. They are suffering permanent traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) from repeated accelerations of up to 60 g when their boats slam down on waves. The hull of the boat might only suffer 6 g, but due to rotational leverage and the whip effect this can mean 60 g near the heads of crew members! The chatbot explains the rotational leverage thus: |The hull is close to the pivot point (small r), so its acceleration |is low. The crew members standing upright on the deck or bridge are |much farther away from that pivot point (large r). Their heads are |at the very end of this long lever arm, causing them to move much |faster and stop much more violently. . There's also an additional "whip effect": |Just like the tip of a leather whip moves much faster than the |handle because the energy is compressed into a smaller mass, the |upward structural vibrations accelerate as they reach the highest, |lightest parts of the boat - the open bridge and the standing crew |members. Because the human torso and neck are flexible, the torso |collapses slightly and then snaps back. This causes the head to |whip forward and backward at a much higher velocity than the feet. .
