Scaling it down to unsigned char introduces a problem (the integer promotions) that would come up with uint32_t only if INT_MAX > UINT32_MAX. I've frequently used systems where 'int' was a 64-bit type, but from the OP's description, that's unlikely to be the case on the platform he's targeting. If you had used unsigned int rather than unsigned char, you would guarantee that the integer promotions could not come into play.
