The Muslims had their own golden age while we were having our dark
age. They also preserved many of the ancient texts as they also conquered
a big chunk of the old Roman Empire including the eastern capitol. They
contributed to mathematics specifically and adopted/propagated some work
done by Indians. A number of terms in modern math are borrowed from Arabic.
They invented algebra and gave us the zero.
Even that bit of history is by no means simple.
