When the USB port is plugged in, the phone displays a menu with options for charge only, mass storage, webcam, and perhaps something else. I use rsync to quickly upload pictures from the phone. Fwiw, I found rsync to be massively faster than gphoto[2] for that purpose, because gphoto[2] requires reading the metadata for every file on the storage device _EVERY_ command, even if you're just trying to copy one file.
