It periodically syncs the GUI view with the filesystem, yes. But I doubt
that it uses so many resources that you would actually fell that your
computer had "slowed down".

Let's test it. My Finder in Mavericks now takes up 114MB of RAM, and then I
open up the "All my Files" view in the Finder. The content of the Finder
window comes upp instantaneously and the "folder" contains 23,579 files. I
make the icons as small as possible and the window as large as possible,
and I'm probably looking at at least 200 icons now. Finder takes a couple
of seconds to update thumbnails to draw all the icons. The Finder RAM has
"soared" up to 147MB! :) It is using 0,0% of CPU though.

Which consumes at most a couple of hundred megs of RAM and may spike the
CPU the first time around... It wouldn't actually "slow down" the computer.

As my testing has shown, that probably isn't a very factual advice though.

I don't know the specs of the OP's computer, and yes - the intial "update
the thumbnail" process can take a couple of seconds, even on my machine,
but when done, the CPU goes to 0% and memory is negligible.
