In the above case, you do need them; you can re-write it as

    a = malloc((n+1) * sizeof *a);

and then you don't need them.

> heap = a+1;

I don't follow; if ``heap'' is supposed to be one-based, wouldn't
it simply be:

    heap = malloc((n+1) * sizeof *heap);  /* or ... sizeof(node) */
 
and then ignore heap[0], use heap[1..n], and free(heap) when done?
