It boggles >my mind that Nathan Fillion show got canceled while crap like The Rookie is >now in it's 4th season. It's the difference in programming attitudes between Fox, the Big 3 networks, and the fifth networks. Years ago, someone on a Webboard repeated what I thought was a valid argument made by his friend criticizing "Serenity", the intended pilot for Firefly, that it had too much exposition and the scenes introducing each main character individually dragged. He thought Fox was right to air it last, after it had cancelled the series and decided to leave three episodes unaired. Unfortunately, one of the unaired episodes was "Trash", which I thought was the best episode. Instead, Fox gave the traditional network note for a Western tv series: Your pilot shall open with a fist fight. Hence, "The Train Job", an episode I found to be unimaginative. In other words, Joss Whedon could have made a much better effort to hook a generic tv audience and not write something for a science fiction fanbase that's willing to watch paint dry if you give it an alien setting. He could have written a pilot episode that immediately hooks you on the story, with character background details and origins dispersed throughout the first half of the season. Really, the only characters that absolutely required background details were Mal and Zoe. The Tams' background was a mystery to be revealed later anyway, so clearly that could have been skipped. And no, I wouldn't have written "The Train Job" so lamely. I liked the Serenity post-series movie a lot, even though it was much darker than the tv series. I appreciated that it was clearly within the continuity and that it cleared up a lot of important background details, such as how the hell Reavers existed.
