I have several mail and news account which TB checks at startup. How can
I tell which transfer it is involved in when it can't complete it for
some reason? Occasionally I get the activity indicator turning (or the
green bar indicator in the status bar moving back and forth) until, I
guess, TB times out. I can sometimes - but not always - stop the problem
transfer by clicking on "Stop" which I have in the menu bar.

If it has a problem connecting with one of the servers, is it possible
to tell which one it is? Is there a log in TB somewhere which might
record this?
