I've got a one of the CCR (Cloud Core Routers) on the head-end of my WISP handling several hundred customers. Obviously you don't need one that powerful, but they all use the same OS and have roughly the same options. Very very customizable and security updates / upgrades are available for YEARS. Consumer routers generally stop receiving security updates after just a year or two and then you're running a router that ends up as part of a botnet.
