I grew up down wind of an Army base. We felt that a miss aimed at that base would get us. There were 2 families in town who built fallout shelters in their backyards. Most people knew who built one. Parts of the town were in a small valley... well, not what I would call deep. But it is possible that a shock wave wouldn't hit all of the town. The windows in our classrooms were about 3 feet above the floor. The walls were a brick facade over concrete with rebar. The windows were sectioned off both horizontally and vertically. But it was a huge expanse of glass. The botom and top part of each window could be opened outward. There was a wooden pole that could reach up and be used with a hook end to move the lever holding the window closed and then push it open of pull it closed. I think the ceilings were about 8-9 feet, the windows covered about 5-6 feet of that. My mother went to schools that were 2-4 floors in the 1940s. Except for the high school, those were being torn down and replaced in the 1950s. All of the elementary schools went to one floor in the 1950s and the junior high was new and one floor in the 1950s. The high school was in an old 3 story building left over from the 1940s. It had a 4th floor but no classes were held in there. Lots of rumors like pet bats of the Principle, etc. but we figured it was just used for storage. -- JimP.
