The act of reading itself is legal in C since C99+TC3 (albeit one might 
argue that even the original C89/90 permitted it).

However, the above permission still does not protect you from trap 
representations. In general case a type-punned representation might 
easily end up being a trap one, thus still triggering UB. So, it all 
boils down to specific properties of the given implementation. If in 
yours type punning between float and integer types never produces traps, 
then you are perfectly safe.
