Opening a console is same for all sorts of linux distros... ctrl+alt+f4 do your job, and then try any of the combination of ctrl+alt+f*(*: 0-9), if that doesn't work, you can reboot from console sudo shutdown -r now Regarding recovering password, you should read the following, which should probably work. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LostPassword Good luck!
