What makes you think it wasn't clear - crystal clear even - to JJ ?

I'm going to ignore that, as it isn't even remotely related to the "don't 
you use a menthod I do not readily recognise" stance EverJan posted.  Nor is 
it anything JJ was seemingly aiming for (conciously or not) or advocating.

I do not understand how the above is connected to my "just make it clear 
when you do" advice.  Sorry.

But what has that to do with JJs decision to use elements ID as an object ?

I get the feeling we are not even talking about the same thing(s) here ...
