Nvenc/cuvid require a KEPLER or greater GPU. You can
discover the GPU with lspci | grep -i nvidia.
For example, my card is:
NVIDIA Corporation GK208B [GeForce GT 730] (rev a1)
The "K" stands for "Kepler."
The problem is that most OEMs will not include the
actual GPU in their marketing specs. For example,
GT 730 cards come in three different models: GF108,
GK108, and GK208. The "F" represents a Fermi GPU
that does NOT support nvenc/cuvid. An uninformed
buyer may be attracted to the low price of the GT 730
and inadvertently acquire a GF108.
Online sellers ALWAYS withhold detailed specs. It
becomes impossible to make an informed decision.
That's why I no longer buy shirts from on-line
merchants. The fabric weight is NEVER specified.
I have bought what I thought would be a cheap and
warm (i.e. thick) winter shirt only to open the box
and find essentially a piece of ultra-thin tissue
paper.
It also seems to be an American phenomenon. British
online merchants usually include far more detailed specs.
American shopping sites are designed by the spiritual brethren
of Steve ("Dummy") Carroll. They are all javascript/css
dazzle and no substance.
