The standard CD (16-bit) encompasses 96dB of dynamic range. If we consider the sound of normal breathing to be 0dB, a chain saw or jack hammer would be about 110dB which already exceeds that range. Dynamic range is just a RANGE between the loudest and softest sounds (expressed usually as a ratio of intensities or signal voltages). A musical performance is intended to express IDEAS and a dynamic range greater than 96dB should NEVER be necessary. However, only classical music utilizes dynamic range. That puerile junk idiom known as "popular" music only has a SINGLE level near the top of the range. This results from the "loudness wars" that have dominated popular music production for decades. Higher dynamic range can be important in accurately recording real world situations, but few people seem to know how to do it properly. For example, I have yet to encounter an accurate capture of a sonic boom. All the material on YouTube and elsewhere makes the sonic boom appear to be a sonic "pop." In reality, the sonic boom is nearly ear-splitting and able to even shatter windows. I would like to hear the soft chatter of human voices suddenly interrupted by the thunderous clap of a sonic boom in its true intensity but such a recording is nowhere to be found. I suppose that I'll have to do it myself (using my $2.95 microphone element and GNU/Linux tools).
