I’m a woodworker, not a scientist. But I’ve read more than John, so I have
a better grip on the current thinking.

For the OP, “works” in science has an operational meaning. We can say we
know how gravity works when the theory generates quantitative predictions
that match detailed and corroborated measurements. General relativity is
such a model, and because its unambiguous predictions match experiment very
well and over a very wide range of measurements, then physicists say that
its description of how gravity works is a good one.

The description of that can be found in any number of books aimed at the
lay reader, though to get more precise and detailed, you’ll have to dive a
little deeper.

You will find that there are some people here, like John, who don’t care
about the operational definition of “works” that scientists use. These
people will have various complaints, such as:
- space cannot possibly influence matter, because of the human meaning of
the word “space”;
- it’s too mathematical, which means it’s wrong;
- the only “real” explanations can involve matter banging on matter;
- my theory is easier to understand and easier to understand is always more
right.
Be on guard about thinking like this.
