You should see some of the stuff I wrote (and still do).  I started
with straightforward data acquisition, for which assembly is absolutely
necessary to achieve the precise timing, but I soon became proficient,
and cavalier, enough to extend that to data processing, graphics, etc.
That latter stuff is usually relegated to high-level code, but if you
refuse to be a slave of convention then assembly is perfectly suitable,
It may take 2-3 times longer to produce code, but I am not averse to
telling any managerial types to go and stuff themselves if they were
to give me any trouble about it.

These schmucks on sci.physics and elsewhere couldn't code in assembly
if their lives depended on it and consequently, to avoid the shame
of ineptitude, will rally against its use.
